السكر من الأمراض المزمنة اللي بتأثر على أنسجة مهمة, زي شرايين القلب, الكليتين, الأعصاب وشبكية العين.
و لتجنب المضاعفات دي وأثرها يجب إتباع نظام غذائي صحي والحفاظ على مستوى السكر الطبيعي، ويجب على مرضى السكر الكشف الدوري سنوياً على العين وخاصة الشبكية لتدارك أي تأثير ضار للمرض مبكراً.
وعادة ما تبدأ تأثيرات السكر بتذبذب أو ضبابية الرؤية، ثم ارتشاحات على الشبكية,
في المرحلة دي يمكن تدارك الوضع إما بإستخدام مضادات الإرتشاح داخل العين أو بالليزر.
أما في المراحل المتأخرة فيتكون نزيف و ممكن يزيد النزيف خاصة مع تكون أوعية ضارة بالشبكية قد تتحول إلى تليف بالشبكية, و أحيانا تؤدي إلى مياه زرقاء وعندها يتوجب التدخل الجراحي.
